Pacific Palisades, Calif. (June 27, 2012)– The Pali Blues returned home to Palisades High School after two road trips in three weeks to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps, the team that snapped their nine-game winning streak in Vancouver last Sunday. This match, however, went in favor of the Blues who overcame an early goal deficit, courtesy of Jenna Richardson, to get three points from this match. Michelle Pao and Danielle Hubka each scored in the Blues’ come-from-behind win on Wednesday night.
The Whitecaps stunned the Blues early in the match when Richardson stole the ball from defender Whitney Engen, and found herself in a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Anna Picarelli. Richardson succeeded in fining the back of the net and it was Whitecaps 1, Blues 0 in the 7th minute of the match.
It wasn’t long before the Blues were back in the game. In the 28th minute, forward Michelle Pao took a shot from inside the penalty area and scored the equalizer for Pali.
Seven minutes later, forward Lynn Williams did well on the right side of the field to get past her defenders and make room for a cross. Danielle Hubka was on the end of it to head home the game-winner in the 35th minute.
No more goals were scored in the second half and the Blues kept their 2-1 score through the final whistle.
Pali’s next two matches will be doubleheaders with brother club, the LA Blues, playing in the USLPRO, at Titan Stadium on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. The July 6 fixture against the Colorado Rapids is set to start at 3 p.m. PT. The Blues will be honoring US Women’s National Team star Abby Wambach on July 8 during halftime of the match against the Rush, which starts at 12 p.m. PT.
