Commerce City, Colo. (June 8,2012) – The Pali Blues defeated the Colorado Rapids in W-League action on Friday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park by a score of 2-1. Lynn Williams provided both of Pal’s goals while Erin Gunther scored the Rapids’ lone goal. With the win, the Blues created a bigger gap between first place and second place in the Western Conference standings, and improved to an unblemished 6-0-0 record for the season.
The Blues scored the first goal of the game in the 26th minute when Sarah Huffman set up Lynn Williams. The next one came from Williams again in the 53rd minute, this time with Liz Bogus earning the assist.
With 20 minutes left to play, the Blues conceded only their second goal of the season when Erin Gunther scored for the Rapids, but Pali held on to the lead and finished the battle with a 2-1 victory.
Blue head coach Charlie Naimo shared his thoughts on the game.
“The conditions were extremely challenging,” he said. “Between the wind and altitude, it made for some interesting moments. That being said, the team got up 2-0 and were able to fight for the win. It is great that they were able to come through because that result in such a match will make us mentally tougher.”
The Blues will play one more game while in Colorado against the Rush on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT/12 p.m. MT. They will return home for a week and a half before going on the road again for a three-game trip through the Northwest taking on the Seattle Sounders, Victoria Highlanders, and Vancouver Whitecaps in five days.
