Another week has come and gone in WPS action. As was the case in the first week, many Pali Blues alumnists found their way onto the rosters to contribute their athletic ability on the field.
Up first, the St. Louis Athletica drew with the Chicago Red Stars at Toyota Park. Both Whitney Engen and Britney Klein started for Chicago, however, only Engen played the full 90 as Klein was subbed out in the 70th minute. On the other side of the field, India Trotter and Ashlyn Harris watched on as Hope Solo started in goal for the Athletica, while Kendall Fletcher played the entire match.
In other Saturday WPS action, FC Gold Pride took on Karen Bardsley and her Sky Blue FC. Unfortunately for Bardsley, she came out on the losing end, as FC Gold Pride won their first match of the season. Representing the Pali Blues FC Gold Pride roster were Carrie Dew, Ali Riley, and Kelly O’Hara who all went the distance in the 3-1 victory. O’Hara herself earned two assists on the day, setting up Christine Sinclair and Marta in the 76th and 83rd minutes respectively. Kandace Wilson entered the match as a late sub at the 79th minute. Rosie Tantillo did not make the bench.
The Boston Breakers and Philadelphia Independence ended in a stalemate all tied at one. Late in the match, Lauren Cheney was served inside the box off a cross. Her ensuing header missed just over the bar. Other former Pali Blues in action for Boston included Amy LePeilbet and Liz Bogus. Danesha Adams from the Pali Blues class of 2008 also made her season debut for Philadelphia in the 69th minute. Former Pali Blues stars Val Henderson and Sarah Walsh both dressed for the game but both were unused subs. And finally, number 1 draft pick Tobin Heath is off at the school of hard knocks after being on the losing end of a defeat at the hands of Abby Wambach and Cat Whitehall’s Washington Freedom. Heath played all 90 minutes in the 3-1 loss.
"Abby and Cat and a number of their players are very solid. I have great respect for them. Competing against them at this level is awesome,” told the team website afterwards. “I’ve been on a number of teams that win, so I bring that edge. I have the experience which helps with the development of our players, and try and carry the rhythm out there. I just try to be productive on the offensive end and give my team a spark when we need it.”
