BLUES TOP VENTURA COUNTY FUSION, 2-1

Ventura, Calif. (Saturday, June 27, 2009) - The Pali Blues Soccer Club increased their regular season record to 5-0-3 after defeating Ventura County Fusion (1-3-2) on Saturday night. Along with the win, the Pali Blues take the number one spot in the USL’s W-League Western Conference.

The Blues had several chances to score during the first half but it wasn’t until forward Kelley O’Hara scored her first goal ever as a Pali Blue to put the team up 1-0 in the 32nd minute. With a feed from Iris Mora, O’Hara took advantage of her speed, lost her defender and took a shot inside the penalty area to beat Fusion goalkeeper, Kay Hawke.

Christen Press came onto the field in the second half and created dangerous offensive opportunities that kept the Fusion on their toes. Press tallied the second goal in the 64th minute, by unleashing a rocket from 30 yards out, stunning the goalkeeper, as well as the crowd. The Blues had plenty more quality chances to score throughout the second half but were not lucky to find the net.

The Fusion jumped on the board when Colleen Gibson of the Fusion chipped a ball, grazing through the fingers of Blues goalkeeper, Kristin Olsen, in the 74th minute.

"It wasn’t our best game; I think we underachieved to say the least, but it’s good to know that we can get a result," said Head Coach Charlie Naimo.

The Blues travel a short way to play at Bishop Mora Salesian High School, taking on the L.A. Legends on Wednesday, July 1st at 5:00 pm. After two away games, the defending national champion Pali Blues Soccer Club will return to the Stadium-by-the-Sea playing against conference rivals Ventura County Fusion, as well as presenting their first annual Pali Blues Teddy Bear Toss. The game, benefiting the children and families of Upward Bound House and The Elevate Hope Foundation, kicks off Sunday, July 5, at 1PM.
