Steve Galluzzo, Sports Editor

With another exciting year of sports on the horizon, it’s time to look back at the games, events and athletes that made headlines over the last 12 months in Pacific Palisades. Counting down the Top 10 stories in 2008...

2. Pali Blues Kick to League Championship

It’s hard to imagine a franchise enjoying more success in its first year than the Pali Blues had in their inaugural W-League season.

The team debuted in January on a cold and rainy night at Stadium by the Sea, the Blues played Beijing to a 1-1 draw in an exhibition game, giving local fans a glimpse of the high level of soccer they were to enjoy all season.

Under Coach Charlie Naimo, the Blues capped a perfect 14-0-0 record with a 2-1 victory over FC Indiana in the W-League championship game in Virginia Beach on August 2. The Blues scored twice in the final eight minutes, on goals by Amy LePeilbet and Kandace Wilson.

"We’re very proud to bring a championship back home to the Palisades," Naimo said. "That was our goal right from the start and it feels good to have accomplished what we set out to do."
